Many people still think of acupuncture as complicated and time-consuming both to learn and to practise. While this may be true of the traditional version, modern acupuncture is quick to perform and is easily learned by health professionals because it is an extension of what they already know and makes use of modern understanding of anatomy and physiology. This book is a practical manual which demystifies acupuncture and explains how it can be used to provide safe and effective treatment for those disorders for which it is effective. It is based on long experience of teaching modern acupuncture to health professionals. The aim throughout is to make the practitioner self-sufficient in acupuncture rather than reliant on rules of thumb and rote learning. To do this, the book introduces a new terminology using the concept of an 'Acupuncture Treatment Area' that is not identical with either traditional acupuncture points or trigger points. This approach integrates acupuncture seamlessly into the rest of clinical practice.
